Transliteration with Attached Lessons

Basic Information: Turn on transliteration options for languages that require it:

  • Transliteration: Enable this feature to get an idea of how to pronounce the text/script of your studied language/target language.

  • LingQ Language/Studied Language: The language you focus on in your current study session.

  • Your Language: The language that you understand the most.

Hover and Click Words for More Information

Hover over each word in Your target language to gather details about your linked lessons:

Information per word:

  • Word Status in LingQ: Pulls data from your LingQed word’s to display the status of a word you click on: D (ignored), K (Known), 1 (New), 2 (Recognized), 3 (Familiar), and 4 (Learned).

  • Definitions: Previously LingQed words from your data and data from LingQ library or translation tool (depending on definition).

  • Text-to-speech (TTS): Enable Text to Speech on Word Click in the Toggle Settings menu to get text-to-speech every time you click on a word or highlight multiple words at once.

Actions Per Word:

  • Click To LingQ Words: Enable this feature to quickly LingQ words every time you click words on each caption to check their meaning.

  • Click to Auto-LingQ words: Enable this setting to add new words to your vocabulary list.

  • Speech-to-Text (TTS) Automatically on Word Click: Enable this setting to hear the computer-generated audio (not original video audio) of the word you click, phrase you highlight, or line of text you're currently on in your video.

Study Tip: To hear the original speaker's pronunciation, go back to the point in your video you wish to hear the original speaker pronounce the line of text after using TTS and trying to speak the line yourself.

Feature Tip: Use the Shadow feature in any of Rooster's Video overlay tools to practice pronunciation along with the original speakers in your videos!

  • Mark Word Ignore, Known, or Status 1-4 (LingQ word first): After LingQing a word (either in LingQ or using the abilities within Rooster extensions, click on the word in your subtitles to see its status, mark a word Ignore or Known.

  • Word Definitions on Hover: Hover over a word in your caption to get a simplified view of the word.

  • Copy sentence/caption/subtitle line: Copy the current caption/phrase/sentence.

  • Translation text color: Change the color of your translation text using the color picker.

β€˜Word Effects’ Feature

Basic Information: This feature allows you to change multiple visual options depending on the word’s LingQ status.

  • Current options include increasing size (Increase Size), adding a border (Border), text-shadow (Text Shadow), and capitalizing a word's first letter: Capitalize (1).

Linking Already Created Courses and Lessons (6 Steps)

  1. On Rooster’s video overlay menu, scroll to Add LingQ details (Optional) and click Courses:

  1. Click Select a Course:

  1. Select the Course you wish to LingQ with Rooster’s video overlay features:

Note: To create a new course, select Create New Course instead of selecting an existing course from your LIngQ library.

  1. Click Select a Lesson:

  1. Select the Lesson you wish to LingQ with Rooster’s video overlay features:

Your linked LingQ Course ID (Optional) and LingQ Lesson ID (Optional) sections should be filled in with numbers.

These ID numbers match the selections you made in steps 1-6 above. These numbers are pulled from LingQ’s course ID system β€” the numbers LingQ files your selected LingQ course and lesson under.

  1. Click Attach Lesson ______ [Your selected lesson # will be printed here] and Play Video:

Note: It will take a few moments for Rooster’s extension to retrieve your data, but then your information will be loaded, and your video will be playable.

Note: To avoid seeing Rooster’s video overlay on top of the platform's own subtitles, turn off your platform's captions/subtitles for your video.

Creating a New Course or Lesson in LingQ via Rooster Overlay Tools (5 Steps)

Basic Information: Create LingQ lessons in any language with a few simple clicks.

  1. Select Create New Course in the drop-down menu of Select a Course instead of selecting an existing course from your LIngQ library:

  1. Write the name of your new course in the popup if you don’t want to go with the default listed in the popup:

  1. Click OK to lock in your new course title. Or hit Cancel to close the dialogue box and avoid creating a new course:

  1. Click Create Lesson and Play Video:

Note 1: You’ll see #1 after clicking OK in step three. Even though your new lesson name doesn’t appear after clicking OK, click #2. When you click #2, Rooster’s extension sends info to LingQ to create the new course and lesson you are trying to create.

Note 2: If a course (name) is selected but not a lesson, you’ll be prompted to 'Create Lesson and Play Video' as seen in step 4.

  1. Wait a few moments while the Rooster extension pulls data from your video’s player, sends it to LingQ, and refreshes your page to display the overlay using the Rooster tool:

Note: The number and type of popups will depend on your selected settings in the expanded section of the Toggle Settings. Click your Toggle Settings button to view your checked settings.

Import Captions to LingQ in Multiple Languages

If you're studying multiple languages within LingQ, import the subtitles/captions of your favorite video with Overlay tools that work with YouTube and Netflix.

This feature will import subtitles for your desired language from your video to your corresponding language code profile. This won't import translations to your current studied language.

This beta feature is currently only available within these two overlay extensions: Rooster YouTube Tools for LingQ and Rooster Netflix Netflix Tools for LingQ.

How to Study One Piece of Content in Multiple Languages ( 5 Steps)

Before starting, make sure you have added your desired languages to LingQ. For example, say you've never added the Icelandic language to your LingQ profile, and you try these steps. In this case, nothing will appear on your currently studying self on LingQ because that language doesn't exist for you yet.

  1. Click the " + " button to Add More Languages:

  1. Expand the drop-down menu using the carrot icon πŸ”½ and scroll to your desired language.

  1. Click the white box to import your language to LingQ on the corresponding language code.

  1. Continue with steps 1-3 until you've added all the languages you're learning in LingQ:

  1. Click Create Lesson and Play Video.

It'll take a few moments for a new menu to pop up, your video to play with your selected language pair, and your translations to be imported into their corresponding language codes.

Attaching An Existing LingQ Lesson To A Video (6 Steps)

Basic Information: Connect a current LingQ lesson to a video using Rooster Video Overlay Tools β€” currently available for YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, Funimation, Yle Areena, Viki, and Weverse. Check the **Use LingQ Text/Translation box to have Rooster’s tool pull text, translations, and timestamp information from your desired LingQ Lesson.

How-To Attach An Existing LingQ Lesson To A Video You Want To Study With (6 Steps)

  1. Click Courses:

  2. Click **–Select a Course–":

  3. Select your desired course.

  4. Click β€œβ€“Select a Lesson–”:

  5. Select your desired lesson.

  6. Tick the check box to Use LingQ Text/Translation /ensure the check box to Use LingQ Text/Translation is checked if you want Rooster’s Tool to pull text, translations, and timestamp information from your desired LingQ Lesson.

Your LingQ lesson must have timestamps to properly attach to your video and use this feature; otherwise, the Rooster overlay tool will use the subtitles pulled from the video you're watching.

Toggle Settings (A.K.A. Expanded Video Settings) Menu

Your Video Settings section is your hub for customizing your session experience. From choosing your font size, style, and color to activating your LingQ-related popups, text-to-speech (TTS) settings, and custom keybindings, it’s all done here.

Settings List:

  • Download Subtitles: Download your captions for a selected video. Choose between SRT or TXT files and get a combined subtitles file (dual-language, line-by-line subtitles in your selected languages) or single-language subtitle files (single-language, subtitles of your selected languages) of your captions on a selected video.

  • Change Font Style: Select from various font styles to view your subtitles for a selected video.

  • Change Font Size: Resize the text of your captions/subtitles by using the provided slider to adjust the size of your subtitles until they’re just right for your study session.

  • Color Settings: Modify the colors of New, Known, Deleted, Ignored, status 1-5 words, and Card Word.

  • Lesson Settings: Interact with your captions using the Rooster Observer and Rooster Observer LTE menus. You can also open the LingQ lesson you attached to your video from this menu.

  • Reset Display: Having trouble with your display? Reset your display settings to their default settings.

  • Show Popups: Check and uncheck this setting to display popups related to the New, Known, and LingQed words when you attach a lesson to a video you are currently watching with Rooster overlay tools. These windows will appear and disappear based on your current caption/subtitle line throughout your watching experience.

  • Show Translation: Displays the translation line of your video’s subtitles.

  • Move Menus: Activate this setting to move your (dual) captions around on your current video. Uncheck this feature when you move them to keep them where you like them best.

  • Pause on Mouseover: Pause your video every time you mouseover/hover over your current subtitle/caption line.

  • Alert for Dangerous Buttons: This setting will alert you when you're about to do something that may affect your study session or LingQ stats. For example, an alert popup will appear if you have new words (β€˜blue’ highlighted words) in the lesson and you click the Finish lesson button:

  • Floating Captions: Clickable captions of your studied/target language in a convenient popup window for your video. Click the line and quickly navigate to that point in your video.

  • Floating Translation: Clickable translations (your native/most fluent language) in a convenient popup window for your video. Click the line and quickly navigate to that point in your video.

  • Highlight Known Words: Display the color you set for your Known words β€” within your subtitles β€” when your lesson is attached to your current video using a Rooster video overlay tool.

  • Show End Screen: Displays a summary of words/data pulled from the video at the end of the study session/after watching the full video:

    1. Lesson Stats for your study sessions, such as Total Listening Time and Total Words Read:

  1. A selection menu for LingQ Word Status’s:

  1. A List of all blue words left in your lesson with a green check mark (Mark Known) and a red β€œx” (Ignore Word) next to each blue word, along with buttons (at the top of the list) for Marking All Known and LingQing All Words.

  2. Open LingQ Lesson button.

  3. Close End Screen button.

  • Caption Buttons: Display buttons such as:

  • Keybindings: Utilize and modify LingQ-related keyboard binds on a given player (currently, Rooster overlay tools are only available for Viki, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and YouTube).

  • Auto LingQ on Click: LingQ all lesson words or mark words as known with a single click.

  • Text To Speech on Word Click: Activate text-to-speech (TTS) when you click on a word in your target language.

  • Text-To-Speech (TTS) Voice: Choose different voices for text-to-speech functionality.

  • Transliteration: Offers transliteration options for languages that require it.

Note: This is how the Rooster Tools Menu first appears after attaching a lesson or applying language settings using Rooster Video Overlay Tools such as Rooster Viki Tools and Rooster Youtube Tools.

Note: All check-marked (white check-marks on blue background) options mean they are β€œturned on”/implemented for your video session.

Using Rooster Tools without Attaching Or Creating a Lesson

When you first enter into a video compatible with a Rooster Tool, it may take a few seconds to a few minutes of playing the video before the Rooster Tools Menu pops up:

Tip: If you don’t see it after a few minutes, try refreshing your page a few times before waiting a few seconds to a few minutes for the Rooster Tools menu to pop up.

Once you see the menu, go to the Choose languages for subtitles section and input your video language (your video’s caption language), your top line (your target/studied/LingQ language), and your bottom line (your native/most fluent language) information into the three drop-down menu’s for each category.

Note: Don’t forget to click Apply and Play Video to prompt Rooster Tools to pull the right data for you to study and watch your video!

  • Video Language (Captions): Korean
